There’s a lot of buzz about the “wine pill,” resveratrol. Ever since the news that it can boost endurance and prolong life in mice, people have been rushing out to buy it. Resveratrol is one of the substances that are thought to give red wine some of its health benefits. It was first thought to be just an anti-oxidant. But now it is believed to activate “sirtuins” enzymes that regulate glucose and fat metabolism and increase cell survival.
It must be kept in mind that the health benefits of reservatrol has only been seen in mice NOT humans. And the doses are equivalent to hundreds of glasses of red wine or dozens of resveratrol supplements a day. So, rather than rushing out and buying up a bunch of resveratrol it might be best to wait to see what additional research reveals.
