The US Department of Agriculture reports that the top nine foods Americans eat are whole cow’s milk, 2% milk, processed American cheese, White bread, white flour, and white rolls: refined sugar, colas, and ground beef. When you look at this list it becomes immediately obvious that fiber especially in the form of fruits and vegetables is missing.
The renowned physician Dennis Burkitt is quoted as saying, “The larger the stool the smaller the hospital”. Dr. Burkitt practice for a time in Africa and found that the native diet which was high in fiber resulted in far fewer chronic diseases than what he saw in “civilized society”.
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) recommends 5 servings per day of fruits and vegetables. But only 9% of the population and only 20% of family physicians say they consume the daily 5 servings.
We need to change our diet if we want to be healthier. Supplements alone will not do it.
