I was surprised to find an article in the Archives of Internal Medicine which looked at a randomized controlled trial involving selenium supplementation in the treatment of HIV.
In the study HIV viral load and CD4 count were evaluated after 9 months of treatment with high selenium yeast supplementation (200micrograms/day). The study found that the treatment did suppress the progression of HIV-1 viral burden and provided improvement of CD4 count.
For yearsI and many other alternative physicianshave been usingselenium supplementation in treatingviral hepatitis C with very good success. It is good to see the medical community recognize that an inexpensive supplement like selenium can benefit a disease as devastating as HIV.
