This medical term refers to a possible deadly condition where a clot forms in the deep veins of the thighs or calves. If these clots are released and travel to the heart and lungs they can cause death. Jack who is in his 50’s works as a manager in the beverage department of one of the large strip casinos. Several years ago he developed deep venous thrombosis and despite hospitalization and medication they were not able to dissolve the clot. So to prevent the possibility of the clot breaking free and traveling north they sewed in a mess in the abdominal vena cava to catch any stray clots. However, this clot that would not go away was causing in Jack’s words severe leg cramps that come once every 2 weeks. They can last from 5-6 minutes to all night. Muscle relaxers just do not help.
