In 1858 Rudolf Virchow proposed that inflammation causes heart disease, and that the fatty deposit found in arteries was the end point of this inflammation. A Harvard study done in 1980 fed purified cholesterol to rabbits and found that they did not get heart disease. This same group of scientist took the impurities from cholesterol (cholesterol oxides) and fed it to the rabbits and they all died. So you see that anti-oxidants are the key to preventing heart disease.
