In acupuncture, the term “microsystems” is used to describe areas of the body that bear representations of the entire human body upon them, such as the ear, hand and head. Ear acupuncture, also known as auricular acupuncture was first systematically researched in France in the 1950’s by Dr. Paul Nojier, the “healer from Corsica”. He discovered that the whole body is represented on the ear as an upside down fetus. Furthermore, he found that every organ and tissue of the body is connected to a specific location on the ear.
Years later, the advent of MRI technology provided verification that the points that Dr. Nojier associated with specific organs and tissues were accurate. Researchers were able to locate areas for found on the ear lobe that are associated with specific regions of the brain. These and other ear points are the basis of auricular therapy for many types of addiction, including: heroin, methadone, cocaine, alcohol, nicotine, gambling and many others.
Michael Smith M.D., a New York City doctor who has been utilizing auricular therapy to treat a variety of addictions in his clinic for decades, has found that this form therapy plays a significant role in helping patients recover from addiction. His research found that without auricular acupuncture the recidivism rate in the Queens Outreach Program was 95%. When auricular treatment was added to a comprehensive treatment program, the recidivism rate dramatically reduced to around 50%.
When first experiencing auricular therapy, Dr. Smith notes that it is common for hyper-frightened patients to fall asleep due to a prolonged state of acute withdrawal. After several weeks, the patients no longer fall asleep and report increased energy levels. Auricular therapy must be used in conjunction with a traditional treatment plan, counseling and social rehabilitation in order for it to be successful in the long term.
