If you by chance know an alcoholic that refuses to give up his beers or whisky there is hope he can avoid cirrhosis of the liver. A 2 decade long study found that with each cup of coffee drank daily the risk of cirrhosis dropped about 22 percent. Those who drank more than 4 cups per day were only 20 percent as likely to get the disease as people who did not drink coffee.
More than 5 million people in the US have cirrhosis, typically from heavy alcohol use. However, only about a quarter of chronic drinkers end up with the disease which lead researchers to look at influences that life style factors might have a protective effect.
And of course common sense says just do not drink.
